Valencia Falla Commissions

Each of the ~384 fallas of Valencia is its own neighborhood association (a casal faller) that spends the year preparing a satirical statue up to 30 m tall to burn on 19 March, plus the calendar of dinners, processions, and the falleras and falleros who lead them.

A year-round neighborhood social club whose public output is a 30-meter sculpture you set on fire. Membership is family-multi-generational. The Junta Central Fallera coordinates the whole city.

Research note

10 elite Valencia falla commissions, several of them Seccion Especial heavyweights. Most date to the early-to-mid 20th century when the modern Fallas competition crystallized.

  • Falla Convento Jerusalen-Matematico Marzal (1893). Oldest falla in the set
  • Falla Na Jordana (1899). Historic Ciutat Vella commission
  • Falla Espartero - Gran Via Ramon y Cajal (1906). Known as 'El Nostre,' a tradition-bearer
Inside the archetype

How this one actually works

The engine is the casal faller, a clubhouse where members eat, fundraise, and plan all year. Money raised at paella dinners, lotteries, and parties pays a professional falla artist (the artista faller) who spends months building the satirical monument in a workshop. Each commission elects a president and crowns a fallera mayor and a fallera mayor infantil to represent it at citywide events, delegates handle logistics, and the Junta Central Fallera coordinates judging across the whole city. The public payoff lands in one compressed week around March 15 to 19: la plantà raises the finished statue overnight, daily mascletà firework barrages shake the streets, the two-day ofrenda carries flowers to the Virgen de los Desamparados, and la cremà burns everything to the ground on the night of the 19th. Then the calendar resets and next year's build begins almost at once.

Where it comes from

The festival grew out of a carpenters' habit of clearing the workshop for spring, burning wood scraps and the parots (the planks used to prop up candles through winter work) as the days lengthened. The Church folded those bonfires into the feast of Saint Joseph on March 19, the patron of carpenters, which fixed the date that still closes the fiesta. Across the 19th and early 20th centuries the burnt piles turned into dressed figures and then into the towering papier-mache satires built today. UNESCO added the Fallas to its intangible cultural heritage list on November 30, 2016.

Your first time

Turning up is less about talent and more about showing up to eat. You join a casal, buy the commission's shirt, and get pulled into paella nights, prize raffles, and the long run-up dinners months before anything actually burns. Entry is open and multigenerational, so a newcomer usually gets folded in through a family, a workmate, or a neighbor who simply drags you to the next dinner.

Start one yourself

How to start valencia falla commissions in your city

a weekly rehearsal · 50+ people · neighborhood anchor

Signals it's working
  • A consistent core of 50+ people after six months
  • Public visibility through belonging
  • Cross-generational membership (or at least mixed ages by year two)
  • Newcomers absorbed without losing the founding crew
First six moves
  1. Find 3-5 co-founders who can commit to a weekly rehearsal for at least a year.
  2. Pick a recurring time and place. Calendar discipline matters more than perfect timing.
  3. Design a clear visible identity early: name, simple kit or symbol, a short manifesto.
  4. Make the activity itself the recruitment tool. Show up in public; people will join.
  5. Build an explicit beginners path. The first session should feel welcoming, not intimidating.
  6. Decide your contribution to the wider neighbourhood now, not later: a performance, a service, a cleanup, a meal.
Cautions
  • · Expect moderate physical involvement; calibrate expectations honestly.
  • · Don't let founders become irreplaceable. Plan for handover from year one.
  • · Open entry means churn. Build rituals that turn drop-ins into regulars.
