Turf (turfgame.com)

Sweden / Nordics, global · Active 2010-2026, monthly rounds ongoing
Months of work

Swedish-built MMO-style GPS game (by Andrimon) where players capture virtual zones placed on real-world maps using their phone's GPS. Played in monthly rounds with full reset; densest in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, and increasingly the UK and Germany. Annual Bonanza events bring players to a single city for hours-long standalone tournaments (2026 Bonanza in Gothenburg).

Inter-area
Zones are geographically clustered; cities and regions compete via density of held zones and round leaderboards. Berlin community famously rallied under '#noYellowzones' to capture every zone in their city, an explicit city-vs-rest-of-world push. Bonanza events pit city contingents head-to-head.
Intra-area
Local Discord channels filtered by region/area/zone, open city meet-ups (Uppsala, Glasgow, Aland), and a 'Turf Teams' service for organized group play. Players in the same city coordinate routes, share zone-tracking spreadsheets, and run together on Bonanza day.

Orna: Conqueror's Guild

Global (developer Northern Forge Studios, Canada) · Conqueror's Guild launched Oct 31, 2024; Kingdom Wars feature ongoing
Months of work

Pixel-art GPS RPG where players claim real-world Settlements that spawn at popular POIs (parks, landmarks). Each Settlement awards titles (Count, Grand Duke, Emperor) for the holder. Kingdoms (player-formed factions) wage 24-hour Wars against matched rivals.

Inter-area
Settlements are claimed by individual players but rolled up into Kingdom totals; rival Kingdoms wage 24-hour Wars matched by power level. Players from one neighborhood physically travel to contested Settlements to fight off rival Kingdoms. Public 'Carving Stones' at each Settlement let holders taunt rivals.
Intra-area
Kingdom members coordinate Settlement defense schedules, share dungeon parties, raid bosses together, and chat in Kingdom-only channels. The 2024 rework moved territory control onto the main map specifically so local Kingdom-mates could see each other's claims and reinforce them.

Munzee Clan Wars

Global (Munzee HQ, McKinney TX) · Monthly Clan Wars ongoing 2024-2026
Months of work

Players capture physical and virtual 'munzees' at real-world locations. Each month, clans (player teams) battle in Clan Wars with rotating monthly requirements (capture types, regions, point totals). Levels 1-6 with reserved tiers for premium players.

Inter-area
Clans compete globally on monthly leaderboards with explicit level brackets; many clans are organized by city/country and chase regional dominance (e.g, German, Czech, US-state-based clans). Monthly requirements often gate progress on regional capture types so geographically-clustered clans have an advantage.
Intra-area
Clan members coordinate capture runs, share rare-munzee tip-offs in private channels, and host in-person 'munzee events' that count toward clan progress. Local guilds form at the city level to teach newcomers and stake out turf.

Beat the Street (Intelligent Health)

UK-origin, deployed in 200+ towns globally (Edmonton/Enfield, South Derbyshire, Pendle, East Kilbride, Reading, Birmingham, NYC pilot) · Founded 2013; 2024 deployments in Edmonton (Jun-Jul 2024), South Derbyshire, East Kilbride, Birmingham, Pendle
Council-procured

Physical 'Beat Box' RFID sensors mounted on lampposts across a town. Walkers/cyclists/wheelers tap them with a card or phone app to earn points for themselves and their team. Each deployment is town-wide and time-boxed (~6 weeks). 5,000+ schools have participated; reached 2 million people in 200+ places.

Inter-area
Within each town deployment, schools, workplaces, and community teams (often organized by neighborhood/ward) appear on dual leaderboards (total points AND average per member). Public team-vs-team rankings drive playground-level rivalry between schools - Colne Christ Church School topping the Pendle leaderboard was a local-press story.
Intra-area
Each school/community team rallies its members (pupils, parents, staff, neighbors) around a shared total. Cards and apps tally individual contributions that roll up to the team. Prizes (book vouchers, sports equipment, trees) go to the team, not the individual, forcing cooperative behavior.

Run An Empire (Location Games Ltd)

UK developer (Pan Studio), global player base · Active; updated Feb 2025 with new Global Competition end-game
Months of work

Hexagonal map overlay where every hexagon a player runs through is claimed for them; running a loop claims all interior hexagons. Players progress through historical 'Ages' (Bronze, Iron, etc.) by accumulating territory, build castles, and battle neighbors for street/neighborhood control.

Inter-area
Players directly compete with geographic neighbors for adjacent hexagons; castles can be attacked by rival nearby empires. The Feb 2025 update added a Global Competition end-game pitting cities against each other.
Intra-area
Players can form clans/empires that share territory color and aggregate hexagons, defending border zones together. Banner/empire customization gives identity to a local crew.

Global (US-based indie) · Active 2024-2026
Months of work

Players track walks/runs and capture hexagonal tiles on a real-world map; rewards 'determination over speed' so consistency wins, not speed. Joins thousands of nearby players competing for city/town control.

Inter-area
Local geographic competition for hex control - 'capture your neighbors' tiles by being more active than them'. Cities and towns appear on map-level leaderboards.
Intra-area
Friend teams climb leaderboards together; players can 'compete for your local area' as a coordinated team rather than solo.

Walksy / WalkOff (fog-of-war walking games)

Global indie · Active 2024-2026
Months of work

Your city map starts under a mist; every step clears fog around your GPS position and reveals streets, parks, and landmarks. Add friends, join/create guilds, fight guild territory wars over city sectors.

Inter-area
Guild territory wars carve the city into sectors that guilds claim and defend; leaderboards rank guilds by steps, distance, and sectors cleared. WalkOff has a near-identical mechanic.
Intra-area
Guild members coordinate which sectors to clear next, share fog-clearing routes, and rally around shared leaderboard standing. Social accountability inside the guild is the explicit design hook.

Monster Hunter Now - Carnival regional events

Shibuya, Tokyo (Oct 2024) + global event Nov 2024 · Carnival 2024 was inaugural; expanded format planned
Months of work

Niantic's MH-themed AR location game ran its first 'Carnival' Oct 12-13, 2024 in Shibuya with Niantic's event team working with Shibuya City Council to plan safe routes and exclusive monster spawns. Thousands of fans descended on the district.

Inter-area
Shibuya was singled out as the host district, with debut monsters (Nergigante, Silver Rathalos, Gold Rathian) available only there before going global - making the geographic area itself the prize and the bragging right. Subsequent global event reframed it as 'we hunted what Shibuya hunted'.
Intra-area
Niantic coordinates with the local city council; players form ad-hoc parties at Shibuya hunting spots (8-player co-op monsters require physical proximity), creating dense in-person teamwork during the weekend.

25 cities across North America + Europe (NYC, London, Paris, Toronto, LA, Chicago, DC, Denver, Columbus, etc.) · First run early 2024 (US 6 cities); global expansion Jan 2025 to 25 cities
Months of work

Chipotle places a single named Strava segment in each participating city (Chipotle NYC Segment, Chipotle London Segment, etc.). Local Legends (most repeat efforts in 90 days) win individual prizes, AND every city competes on collective mileage on the segment.

Inter-area
Explicit city-vs-city collective mileage competition - winning city gets 'free Chipotle for their city.' Pure geographic stakes.
Intra-area
Within a city, runners rally around the named segment, share it on Strava clubs, and pile up reps cooperatively. Local run clubs adopted the segments as group-run destinations.

Each is organized by a local team (SEMAG 2025 Team in Massachusetts, GEOregon in Oregon, regional Swiss group, etc.).

Inter-area
Regions compete implicitly through Block Party scale, custom geoart, and unique Adventure Labs - e.g, Oregon's anniversary geoart, Massachusetts' SEMAG branding. Each Block Party is a region's calling card.
Intra-area
Local community teams (GEOregon, SEMAG Team, regional Swiss groups) plan multi-stage Adventure Labs, host orienteering and team-puzzle activities at the event where geocachers solve riddles cooperatively in mixed teams. Long-term volunteer effort by regional crews.

Splat Town (KYKUYO, Niantic Lightship ARDK Challenge)

Locations powered by Niantic's VPS database (global) · Submitted to Niantic's 'Explore Together' challenge 2023; live demo continues
Months of work

Built on Niantic's Lightship ARDK, Splat Town lets two-player teams spray Splatoon-style goo onto real-world surfaces at VPS-mapped landmarks. Goo persists across sessions in a server-side database so every player sees the same coverage.

Inter-area
Each landmark calculates which team has the most goo coverage; at regular longitude/latitude intervals, neighborhood-level team rankings are computed and displayed on the overview map - landmark-by-landmark and neighborhood-by-neighborhood.
Intra-area
Players collaborate with their 'goo buddy' (teammate) at the same location, sharing limited energy reserves used both for new goo and for 'bubbles' that clean up opponent goo. The energy economy forces tight cooperation.

Indie (US) · Active 2024-2026
Months of work

Self-described as a hybrid running tracker + neighborhood territory game. Smart GPS overlays let runners chase 10K PBs while 'holding down your neighborhood' against other community members.

Inter-area
Players physically run their own neighborhood to defend it from rivals; explicit framing is 'battle certain people in the community you live in for running territory.'
Intra-area
Community-of-neighbors framing - the design assumes runners know (or come to know) the others competing in their zone, and the leaderboard scope is geographically local rather than global.

Beat the Street

UK (50+ towns/cities) and international · 2014-2026 (ongoing)
Months of work

Free 6-7 week walking and cycling game played across a town. Contactless RFID Beat Boxes are mounted on lamp posts across the playing area; players (children, families, workplaces, voluntary groups) tap cards on boxes to score points. Over 1.9 million participants have played in 5,000+ schools to date.

Inter-area
Public dual leaderboards: schools (and workplaces/community teams) compete against each other in the same town. Two leaderboards (total points and average points) so small areas can still win. Towns themselves also compete for engagement records year over year.
Intra-area
All pupils, staff and families tap for their school; individual taps automatically aggregate into the school's score with no formal team setup needed. Schools coordinate group walks, classes go out together, and families are recruited to boost the school's standing. Strong intra-school pride and mutual recruitment.

191 countries (2024) · 2008-2026 (annual, 3rd Saturday of September; UN official day since 2024)
Start this weekend

Global cleanup day coordinated by Let's Do It! World (Tallinn, Estonia). Each country has a national lead organization that runs its federation of local team events.

Beat the Street

UK (200+ towns) + international · 2013-present (Reading origin; active 2024-2025)
Months of work

Intelligent Health turns a whole town into a 6-week board game. ~60 contactless 'Beat Box' sensors are mounted on lampposts; residents tap an RFID card/fob between boxes (must be within 1 hour) to score points. 1.9-2M players to date across 200+ places; £321.80/adult social value (2025).

Inter-area
Towns themselves benchmark against other Beat the Street towns (case-study leaderboards, 'journey round the world' aggregate). Within a town, leaderboards rank SCHOOLS vs SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY GROUPS vs COMMUNITY GROUPS, WORKPLACES vs WORKPLACES on total + average points (so small and large compete fairly). Prizes. Book vouchers, sports kit. Go to top teams.
Intra-area
A team is everyone at a school / community org / workplace. Their taps pool into one team total, so every walking trip a kid takes helps their school beat the next school. Adults can pick up free cards at distribution points and join the same school/community team as their kids, so the family/block effectively walks together.

Stadtradeln (City Cycling)

Germany (3,000+ municipalities) + Klima-Bündnis cities worldwide · 2008-present (2026 edition running May-Sept)
Council-procured

21-day campaign by Klima-Bündnis e.V. where cities and rural districts compete on how many bike-kilometers their residents collectively log via app. Schools, clubs, companies, citizen groups form sub-teams under their municipality's banner.

Months of work

Madison-based non-profit running a 4-6 week online sustainability game where employees of companies, school districts, and municipalities form teams. Players log daily 'cool choices' (carpool, line-dry laundry, unplug devices) which are translated into points on a public scoreboard. Inter-area
Teams compete on a public scoreboard against other teams - in workplace deployments the teams are usually departments, but Cool Choices has been deployed at school-district and city-employee scale where teams map to physical locations (schools, city halls, neighborhood blocks). The Energy News Network coverage documents how the gamified league produced 'lasting reductions in electricity use'.
Intra-area

California, USA (LA, SF, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Petaluma, Isla Vista) · 2015-present, piloted on 125 blocks; Cool City Challenge launched 2023-24
Months of work

Five-month, nine-meeting structured program where 5-8 households on a city block work together on carbon reduction, disaster resilience, water stewardship and neighbourhood livability. A city launches a campaign and recruits Cool Block Leaders, who invite neighbours onto a team. Block teams then aggregate into 'Cool Neighbourhoods' of ~10 blocks. Pilot achieved 32% average household carbon reduction and won NASA's outstanding sustainability solution.

Inter-area
Cities run city-wide campaigns explicitly to recruit blocks; Mountain View, Petaluma, LA each report block counts and recruitment percentages publicly (e.g. '45% block recruitment rate'). Cool City Challenge frames participating cities as racing to carbon-neutral by 2030 and compares them. Block-vs-block visibility happens through Cool Neighborhood aggregations and city dashboards.

Sant Cugat del Vallès, Catalonia, Spain · 2020-2027 (currently 4th edition, 2025-27 cycle live)
Council-procured

Sant Cugat splits its participatory budget into six neighbourhood processes on Decidim (Centre, Les Planes, Mira-sol, La Floresta, Valldoreix, Sud-Oest). Each neighbourhood gets its own micro-budget envelope and a parallel process where residents propose, debate at Neighbourhood Councils, and vote on local projects. 2022-23 cycle: 815 proposals across 6 neighbourhoods; Centre alone got 226 proposals and 6,247 supports. Children/youth budget envelope of €140k for 2025-27.

Inter-area
Six neighbourhood processes are visibly grouped on the same Decidim platform with sibling pages, support counts, proposal counts and turnout visible per neighbourhood. The platform's process-groups feature is explicitly designed for inter-district visibility, creating implicit comparison ('Centre got 226 proposals, what about us?').
Intra-area
Each neighbourhood has its own Neighbourhood Council that meets in person to debate and validate proposals before voting. Polco Comparison Groups / Track dashboard

USA (Madison, WI HQ; 500+ municipal clients) · Comparison Groups feature released 2023, expanded 2024
Council-procured

Polco is a civic engagement and benchmarking platform for local governments. The Track dashboard lets a city/school district pick up to 9 peer jurisdictions and compare side-by-side on community survey results (NCS), financial health, demographics, and policy outcomes. School-district dashboards filter survey data by neighbourhood, race, gender, age. Layered onto Polco's survey/budget-simulation engagement tools.

Inter-area
Track explicitly compares a municipality against up to 9 peer cities or counties of similar 'geotype' on the same metrics, exposing where your city ranks. NCS benchmarks include 'quality of neighborhood' as a tracked dimension that produces inter-area scoring at both city and intra-city level.
Intra-area
Within each jurisdiction, the platform aggregates input from many residents - the score only moves when many neighbours fill out a survey or weigh in on a budget. Comparison Groups motivate municipal staff and councils to recruit broader participation from their own community to improve the metric.

Council-procured

Belgian civic-engagement SaaS used by cities across Europe to run consultations, ideation, participatory budgeting. The Representativeness Dashboard compares each participating cohort's demographics (age, gender, neighbourhood, education) against the underlying ward/postcode-level population so cities can see which neighbourhoods are over- or under-represented in real time, and target outreach.

Inter-area
Dashboard quantifies participation by neighbourhood/postcode and surfaces the gap vs population. Brussels' commissioner.citizenlab.co instance breaks results down by district, naturally exposing inter-area participation rate as a comparable metric. Cities publicly report which neighbourhoods are 'leading' or 'lagging'.

Inter-area
Match-fund challenges (Pittsburgh One Northside, Lorain County, NYC COVID Neighborhood Relief Match) set explicit competition between projects in different neighbourhoods - first to raise X gets matched, top-raisers get bonus. Public leaderboards of raised amounts per project per neighbourhood.
Intra-area
Each project's $1,200 budget requires recruiting ~35 small donors, which by design forces the leader to organise their immediate block. ioby provides coaching specifically on 'recruit volunteers, grow support networks' - the platform fails for a leader with no local community.

Wandrer.earth - 'every street' completion with area leaderboards

Global (US-founded, OpenStreetMap-based) · 2018-present
Months of work

Gamified exploration platform that ingests Strava activities, compares against OpenStreetMap road/path data, and tells users which streets in their city/neighbourhood/county they haven't yet covered. Awards milestones at 25/50/75/90/99% completion of geographic areas. Includes public leaderboards by area showing top Wandrers for each city, neighbourhood, county.

Inter-area
Wandrer publishes leaderboards per geographic area (city, neighbourhood, county) so users in the same area see who is closest to 100% completion. Areas compete implicitly via aggregate completion percentages. CityStrides offers the same 'see other people's progress' framing.
Intra-area
Less collaborative than competitive at the individual level - but the 'every single street' Strava community routinely organises group rides/runs to cover holdout streets in a neighbourhood together, and shares route plans, with social proof and meet-ups happening at neighbourhood granularity. Reddit/Discord neighborhood subgroups co-ordinate.

GoodGym borough run-and-help groups

UK (London + ~50 other UK boroughs/cities) · Founded 2009, currently ~12 London boroughs + national
Months of work

UK volunteer movement where members run/walk/cycle from a weekly start point to do a physical task for a community group (sorting foodbank, weeding allotments, painting community centre) or visiting an isolated older neighbour. Organised by borough teams (GoodGym Westminster, GoodGym Barnet, GoodGym Islington, etc.). Tasks logged on the platform with photos, totals, and reports.

Inter-area
Borough teams publish 'good deeds' totals - the GoodGym Westminster x Team London Record-Breaking Run reported 176 good deeds, 15 tasks, 70km in 90 minutes as a public benchmark. Borough teams compete in national-week events with team scores. Each borough page is comparable to peers.
Intra-area
Each borough is a coordinated weekly team that runs together to do a task together - the unit of action is the borough team, requiring coordination between members on the night. 'Mission runs' pair a member with an older isolated neighbour in the same borough.

Decidim process-groups + Barcelona/Helsinki/NYC participatory budgeting district tiers

Barcelona ES, Helsinki FI, NYC USA (Decidim/Consul deployments) · Barcelona Decidim since 2017; NYC PB since 2011 (30+ districts by 2021-22)
Months of work

Decidim's 'process groups' feature is explicitly designed for grouping parallel participatory budgets per district/neighbourhood. NYC's PB ran in 30 of 51 council districts in 2021-22, each with at least $1M to spend, residents drop pins on a map to pitch ideas. Helsinki's OmaStadi splits city budget by area (Itäinen, Eteläinen, Pohjoinen, etc.) with separate ideation, deliberation and vote per area.

Inter-area
Each district's PB has its own public site, idea map, vote count and turnout, sitting next to its siblings. NYC publishes 'Participatory Budgeting Projects' as open data on NYC Open Data including per-district project counts and dollars - implicitly ranking districts. Helsinki OmaStadi area pages show comparable proposal/vote totals.
Intra-area
Each district's PB requires neighbours to attend assemblies, co-author proposals, validate at neighbourhood councils, and rally votes. NYC budget delegates ('budget delegates committees') are required intra-district teams of residents who refine proposals together over months.

Front Porch Forum (Vermont town-by-town civic newsletter)

Vermont + parts of upstate NY, USA · Founded 2006, ~200,000 households (~250 forums)
Months of work

Hyperlocal email/web forum, one per town or neighbourhood. ~800/1000 households in Vermont are active members. Center for Media Engagement found 81% of users say FPF makes them more informed (vs 26% for Facebook, 32% for Nextdoor). One rural town hit 50% subscription after 1 year with 66% posting, breaking the 90/9/1 lurker rule (34/44/22 instead).

Inter-area
Each town/neighbourhood has a separate forum with its own subscription rate, posting rate, valuation rating, and demographic mix - all published in FPF's research reports. Towns implicitly compete on the per-town participation ratios; FPF and partners publicise standouts (rural towns hitting 50% household penetration become case studies).
Intra-area
Within each forum, members post local events, lost dogs, ride-shares, requests for help - and the documented outcome is that FPF members are 'significantly more likely to attend a local event, discuss issues with a neighbor or volunteer'. The forum is literally a coordination layer for intra-town mutual support.

Colab.re - Brazilian municipal app with neighbourhood reports

Brazil - Pelotas, Santos, Campinas, Recife, Niterói, Rio Grande do Sul state and 20+ more · Founded 2013, UN award; active 2024
Council-procured

Brazilian civic-engagement app where residents photograph and post urban problems (dengue hotspots, potholes, broken streetlights) geotagged to neighbourhoods. Reports flow to city hall for action and are visible to other residents who can upvote/comment. Won UN award as best urban app and a top-5 Government & Participation app.

Inter-area
Reports are tagged by neighbourhood and visible on a public map; per-neighbourhood report counts, resolution rates, and engagement (upvotes, comments) are surfaced. City halls publish neighborhood-level dashboards using Colab data; the published comparisons between neighbourhoods create implicit ranking.
Intra-area
Multiple residents must independently upvote/corroborate a report for it to gain weight - the platform requires intra-neighbourhood collective action to surface real problems. Residents in the same bairro often coordinate via the app to push city hall on shared issues.

UK (Reading-born; deployed Hammersmith, Burnley, Salford, Lambeth, Sunderland, Edmonton, etc.) · 2015-2026 (ongoing; pilot evaluations 2017, 2018; latest health-promotion-practice paper 2023)
Months of work

Town-wide gamified active travel intervention created by GP Dr William Bird (Intelligent Health Ltd) where residents tap RFID 'Beat Boxes' on lampposts while walking/cycling/wheeling between them within an hour windows to score team points. Runs as 6-week community-wide tournaments. 1.9M+ participants across UK and abroad. Multiple peer-reviewed pilot evaluations (Coombes & Jones 2018, Harris et al. 2023 in Health Promotion Practice).

Inter-area
Live leaderboards pit SCHOOLS against each other (top schools win sports/book vouchers) and pit community/workplace TEAMS (e.g, 27 community/workplace groups in Hammersmith 2024) against each other. Both a 'total points' leaderboard and an 'average points' leaderboard so big and small areas can both win. A deliberate fairness design absent from Pokemon GO-style apps.
Intra-area
Each school/workplace/community group is a single team. Pupils, parents and teachers all contribute taps to one shared total, so older students lap routes to push their school's average up, families coordinate weekend walks, and lunchtime 'top-up' runs are explicitly encouraged. Schools host strategy huddles; PTAs publish weekly ranking emails. Collaboration is the only way to climb the league.

Carrot Rewards. Step Together Challenges (STCs)

Canada (BC, Ontario, Newfoundland & Labrador) · 2018-2019 study; published Mitchell et al. 2020 IJBNPA
Months of work

Federally-backed (Public Health Agency of Canada + provinces) loyalty-points health app that added 'Step Together Challenges'. Teams of partnered users earn shared incentives only when both partners collectively hit individual daily step goals 10 times in 7 days. 24-week matched case-control study (n=20,254 STC users vs ~13,150 controls) found STC group gained +537 mean daily steps over controls (~3,759 extra steps/week).

Inter-area
Users registered with postal code; province-level Step Together leaderboards visible by region. Provincial 'health move' campaigns pitched BC vs Ontario vs NL communities against each other in collective step counts. Each provincial cohort competed via aggregate stats published in-app and via media.
Intra-area
Pairwise team mechanic. Your reward is gated on your PARTNER's goal completion. You literally cannot win solo. This forces nudging, accountability check-ins and mutual-aid messaging inside the pair. The paper documents this 'cooperative-competition' hybrid as the key behavioral lever.

Britain in Bloom / It's Your Neighbourhood (RHS)

UK (1,600+ communities annually) · 1964-2026 (ongoing); IYN sister campaign since 2006
Months of work

Royal Horticultural Society-run nationwide horticulture/community competition with 1,600+ entered communities annually. Groups are judged on three pillars: Horticultural Excellence, Environmental Responsibility, Community Participation. Regional rounds (Heart of England in Bloom, South & South East in Bloom, London in Bloom etc.) feed UK finals. Backed by Saga/RHS academic-grade community-impact studies.

Inter-area
Towns and villages compete against same-category peers (Small Village, Large Town, City) at regional level, then category winners advance to UK finals. Categories prevent a London-vs-Cornish-village mismatch. Direct analog of postcode/size-banded competition.
Intra-area
1/3 of judging score is explicitly 'Community Participation'. Judges reward inter-generational planting days, school partnerships, residents' association links, and volunteer hour counts. The competition's evaluation rubric structurally rewards INTRA-area collaboration; you literally cannot win on horticulture alone.

Department of Rural & Community Development annual competition, organised since 1958, where ~900 towns/villages compete on environment, biodiversity, tidiness, and community participation. Studied by Interreg Europe as a 'good practice' for community-led regeneration; 30,000+ volunteers logging 1M+ hours annually.

Inter-area
National + regional (Munster, Connacht etc.) and category rankings (Village, Small Town, Large Town, Large Urban Centre, City). Annual winner crowned 'Ireland's Tidiest Town' with massive local press and identity prestige; intermediate marks-out-of-450 published per town drives year-on-year improvement.
Intra-area

Gigli.app + Fantagigli (Festa dei Gigli di Nola)

Nola, Italy · 2024-2026
Months of work

Official app for the UNESCO-recognized Festa dei Gigli, where eight enormous wooden obelisks (gigli) representing the historic guilds/neighborhoods of Nola are carried through the streets by paranze (crews of ~120 carriers each). Features live geolocation of each giglio, AR/3D content, an 'identity card' for each giglio (name of paranza, song lyrics), and the standout 'Fantagigli' fantasy-football-style game with a public leaderboard where users build teams from real paranze and earn points based on their performances. Built by Esthar startup with University Federico II Naples Physics Department.

Inter-area
Each giglio belongs to a historic guild/neighborhood paranza; Fantagigli explicitly turns the inter-paranza rivalry into a points-and-leaderboard game (e.g, 2024 standings showed Orgoglio Nolano, San Massimo 'La Trinchese' etc. competing), and the live map shows the physical race-like dynamics between gigli through the medieval alleys.

App Oficial Ofrenda (Junta Central Fallera, Valencia)

Valencia, Spain · 2025-2026
Council-procured

Official app from the Junta Central Fallera (governing body of Valencia's Fallas) that tracks all 384 fallera commissions live during the two-day Ofrenda de Flores parade. BLE 5.0 chips are inserted into each commission's banner (estandarte/cruceta) to measure passage times and current location along the two parade routes (San Vicente and La Pau). Users get push notifications when their chosen commission passes checkpoints. Same chip technology is used in Madrid/Barcelona/Seville marathons.

Inter-area
Every one of Valencia's 384 neighborhood falla commissions is individually tracked and compared on the same map; passage-time data inherently ranks/contrasts commissions and makes the inter-falla competition (and ranking on prizes elsewhere in Fallas) legible to the public in real time.

Users follow their band's progression along the route, time meet-ups, and hop between sound systems. Seville's municipal app added a Holy Week module for 2026 that GPS-tracks each cofradía (hermandad/brotherhood) minute-by-minute from Viernes de Dolores to Domingo de Resurrección, showing the position of the cruz de guía and each paso, plus a public density 'traffic light' powered by 40 city sensors signaling crowding by zone.

Inter-area
Each hermandad is bound to a parish/barrio (Triana, San Lorenzo, Macarena, etc.), and the simultaneous tracking of dozens of cofradías across the same week makes their parallel processions and the inter-barrio identity (e.g, Triana's Esperanza vs. Macarena's Esperanza) legible and comparable.

Shinjo Matsuri official app + Yamada Festival Mikoshi Map

Shinjo (Yamagata) and Yamada (Iwate), Japan · 2023-2026
Council-procured

Official municipal apps for two traditional Japanese matsuri. The winning school's community gets $1m from Abbott for student/community health. 2024 winner Nebraska collected enough donations to save ~60,000 lives across Big Ten regions.

Inter-area
University-vs-university ranking on raw blood donations, but each university is anchored to a real city/college-town - so it's effectively Lincoln vs Madison vs State College vs Columbus competing as places. Public weekly standings.
Intra-area
Each university mobilizes student government, athletic boosters, fraternities, alumni clubs and host-city blood centres (Versiti, ImpactLife, NY Blood Center) to collectively run drives - turning rival fraternities into teammates.

PulsePoint Respond / AED

USA, Canada, UK, Australia (4,500+ agencies) · 2010-present
Months of work

911-connected app that, when a public-place cardiac arrest is dispatched, alerts every CPR-trained user within ~500m of the patient and routes them to the nearest registered AED. >4m users; ~1m responders dispatched to 294,000 cardiac-arrest events by Nov 2024. Cities/counties/agencies adopt PulsePoint as a public-health infrastructure.

Inter-area
Agencies publish coverage maps showing % of registered CPR responders vs population, % of AEDs mapped, and bystander-CPR rates per jurisdiction - de facto benchmarking between cities/counties. PulsePoint Foundation also runs the AED Challenge (cities recruit citizens to register every AED in town).
Intra-area
Mutual-aid by design: an off-duty nurse, firefighter or trained neighbour gets pinged for the person collapsing two doors down. The shared AED registry becomes a community asset everyone in the neighborhood contributes to.

Premier's Active April

Victoria, Australia · 2008-present
Council-procured

Victorian state government runs a 30-minutes-a-day-for-30-days April pledge with a free app. Record year: 124,913 Victorians, 5,000+ teams, 2,000 families. Every signup gets 10 free YMCA gym passes or local-council leisure passes. Local Government Areas (Merri-bek, Ballarat, Hepburn Shire, etc.) run their own launch events and parallel team competitions.

Inter-area
LGAs (councils) compete informally on registration rates and team counts; council leisure services tout their local participation numbers publicly each year. Within the app, you can see workplace teams across the state ranked.
Intra-area
Workplaces, schools and classes form teams that log activity together; local councils put on free 'come and try' events using their leisure centres so neighbours actually meet in person.

Heart of the Community Accreditation (Restart a Heart / Yorkshire Ambulance Service)

Yorkshire, UK · 2023-present
Months of work

Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity-run scheme where secondary schools, colleges, and community organisations apply for Bronze/Silver/Gold accreditation based on the share of staff and students CPR-trained, AEDs registered with the ambulance service, and community-resus events they host. Tied into the global 'Restart a Heart Day' (16 Oct) which streams a live mass-CPR lesson - 130,000+ viewers in 2024.

Inter-area
Public tiered status (Bronze/Silver/Gold) is the inter-area mechanic - towns and schools publicize their level, and a town's collective accreditation count rises as more local schools level up. Other regional ambulance services in England have copied the model.
Intra-area
Within a school's catchment, parents, sixth-formers, staff and AED-host businesses (pubs, shops) all contribute to reaching the next tier. Annual joint training days make CPR-teaching a neighborhood social event.

Walk with a Doc

USA + 34 countries, 711 chapters / 560+ US communities · 2005-present
Start this weekend

Free monthly walks anchored at parks/trails, each led by a local doctor or medical student. Format: 5-minute health-topic talk by the doc, then 45-60 min walk together. Designed for social connection + nature + physical activity + health education simultaneously. Open chapter model means anyone can start one.

Inter-area
Chapter density on the public 'Find a Walk' map is itself a soft competition - cities promote themselves on numbers of active chapters (e.g, Walk with a Doc Texas state network). National 'Walk with a Future Doc' chapter-growth campaigns spotlight top-growing regions.
Intra-area
Each chapter is a recurring neighborhood ritual where doctors, patients and neighbors meet - the same residents return monthly so it builds real local relationships, not one-off events.

Reto Salud (Elche)

Elche, Spain · 2024-2025 (2nd edition)
Council-procured

Elche city council runs a 3-month community challenge targeting childhood overweight/obesity in two specific peripheral neighborhoods (Carrús and Los Palmerales), where families register and log healthy-eating and physical-activity targets together. Designed around 'barrio' identity - the neighborhood as the team.

Inter-area
Carrús vs Los Palmerales is the explicit inter-barrio framing - the two neighborhoods are intentionally pitched against each other for engagement, with public ceremonies recognizing the more-engaged barrio.
Intra-area
Within each barrio, schools, paediatricians, neighborhood associations and parent groups work jointly with the council's salud comunitaria team - very 'Salut als Barris' (Barcelona) influenced. Local cooking workshops, group walks, and shared shopping-list challenges.

Street Tag

United Kingdom, multiple council areas

Intra-area
Residents form small teams, share a team score and recruit family or neighbors through a QR code. Captains organize the group while message boards, bonus tags, routes and local rewards create reasons to explore the same area together.
