Helium Mobile Discovery Mapping + Boosted Locations (LA pilot)

DePIN telecom / coverage gamification · United States (Los Angeles flagship, expanding) · 2024-2026

Helium Mobile subscribers opt into Discovery Mapping: walking/driving with the app maps eligible H3 hexes (~2 basketball courts each); subscribers must hit 40 hexes/day to earn. The data drives Boosted Locations. High-footfall hexes where hotspot deployers earn extra MOBILE rewards. LA was the first city specifically targeted with a city-wide boosted-location rollout.

Areas compete

Cities (LA first, then others) get prioritized for Boosted Locations and have their own coverage growth tracked publicly; deployers pick city-level deployment targets. Heliumtracker.io publishes per-city hotspot rankings.

People support each other

Within a city, subscribers (walkers) feed footfall data that benefits hotspot deployers (different people). A two-sided local supply/demand collaboration: more pedestrians mapping → more boosted hexes → more deployer revenue → better coverage for residents.

Why this is worth knowing

Splits the labor between two local roles (walkers + deployers) so a neighborhood's growth depends on intra-area collaboration between non-overlapping participants. Unusual mechanic.
