Gaps in the landscape, and how to start a group this weekend.

Two flavors of action. Fork an existing pattern in your block this Saturday, or build into a real gap in the landscape. The 7 gaps below are where the world is missing something obvious. The 9 weekend starters under them are pre-existing chapter models you can plug into immediately.

The Heritage Banquet model

Cultural Heritage Banquets (the "Canon" model)

Per-event tickets · regional touring · long tables · live singing · funds heritage

A recurring touring series of large communal banquets at €60-90/ticket, hundreds to thousands of attendees per night, themed by region. Local artisan food and wine, live music, full-room singing of traditional songs, proceeds funding heritage restoration. France's Le Canon Français went viral in 2025 by accident: it turns out there is enormous unmet demand for offline cultural belonging that costs less than a concert but lasts longer than a meal.

Signals it works
  • Sells out in cities of 100k+
  • Repeat attendance over 40%
  • Builds an online network (the canonniers Facebook group) between events
  • Self-funds via tickets + merch + custom-event commissions
  • Quickly portable: British heritage feasts, US BBQ-and-bluegrass nights, Catalan havaneres banquets
Adapt in your city
  1. Pick a clearly-anchored regional culture and a season (e.g. autumn for harvest themes).
  2. Partner with one historic venue and 3 to 5 small artisan producers per event.
  3. Build a setlist of 8 to 12 songs everyone can join in on. Print lyrics on the napkin.
  4. Price tickets to cover food, venue, musicians, plus 10-20% to a named heritage restoration project.
  5. Tour the format through 4 to 6 nearby cities in year one. Run a single weekend festival in year two.
  6. Run an open canonniers-style online network so repeat attendees know each other before the next dinner.
Cautions
  • · Cultural-pride framing gets weaponized fast. Be explicit about who is welcome and why; moderate online channels.
  • · Don't let it become a closed political identity. The point is conviviality, not exclusion.

Seven gaps worth building into

Gap 01

Horizontal 'Strava for traditional neighborhood-team festivals'

Why it matters

Six separate festivals (Nola Gigli, Valencia Fallas, Seville Semana Santa, Notting Hill, Kishiwada/Shinjo/Yamada matsuri) are independently reinventing the same primitive: live GPS map of competing neighborhood crews + identity pages + sometimes a fantasy-league. Each pays its own dev team. No horizontal product exists.

Starter concept

Feature a curated 'Live Crew Tracker' category in BelongHub that surfaces every per-festival app. Then prototype a white-label SaaS that any neighborhood-team tradition (Allerheiligen processions, Holy Week, danjiri, bonfire night, Trinidad J'Ouvert) can spin up in a weekend: BLE/QR chip → live map → identity card per crew → optional fantasy-league. Pilot with one mid-sized festival outside the current six.

Gap 02

Block-as-unit residential apartment buildings (urban Cool Block)

Why it matters

Cool Block works on suburban single-family blocks. Eco-Olympics works on college dorms. Nobody is running it for the apartment-building-as-team unit that defines most European/Asian/Latin American urban housing.

Starter concept

Adapt Cool Block's 9-meeting structured program to an apartment-building or community-of-stairs unit (typical 20-50 households) with a per-building smart-meter feed (à la Energy Sparks). Compete buildings within a postcode; winners get a co-funded solar/heat-pump install or a courtyard upgrade. Easiest pilot: a Spanish or Portuguese city with strong AFA / asociación de vecinos culture (Sevilla, Lisbon, Valencia).

Gap 03

Cross-neighborhood-mixing format for fitness apps

Why it matters

Only one example (My Block, My Hood, My City) explicitly uses the inverted frame: instead of defending your turf, you compete by exploring rival neighborhoods. Every other app rewards staying in your own postcode, which can deepen segregation.

Starter concept

A 'Visiting League' mode in any step/run app: monthly seed assigns your crew to a randomly-chosen neighborhood it has NOT been to; you score by completing 5 sponsor stops there (local cafe, library, mural, civic site). Pilot in a segregated metro (Atlanta, Birmingham UK, Marseille). BelongHub can surface this as a 'bridging-not-bonding' filter.

Gap 04

Tiered status ladder + nested geography for civic readiness beyond CPR

Why it matters

Yorkshire's Heart of the Community CPR Bronze/Silver/Gold is the only clean example of nested civic-readiness accreditation (school → town). Climate, flood-resilience, disability-accessibility, dementia-friendly, mental-health-first-aid, refugee-welcome all could use the same pattern and don't have a unified platform.

Starter concept

Build a generic 'Neighbourhood Readiness Badges' product: Bronze/Silver/Gold tiers for any civic capability with auditable criteria. School-level status feeds town-level status feeds county-level status (Plastic Free Schools → Plastic Free Communities is the proof). BelongHub becomes the catalog/directory; an open standard for criteria becomes the moat.

Gap 05

Polygon-completion bounties for civic goals (not just maps)

Why it matters

Hivemapper customer Bursts pay a shared team payout for 100% road-coverage of a polygon. The same mechanic could fund 100% AED-registration in a postcode, 100% tree-survey in a borough, 100% draught-proofing audits on a block.

Starter concept

Partner with one council or insurer to post a £20k bounty for 100% AED-coverage of a defined polygon, split among every PulsePoint-trained resident who participated. BelongHub catalogs the bounty board and the resulting teams. Avoids the token-speculation reputational risk of pure DePIN.

Gap 06

Per-postcode dashboard layer on top of Strava-class apps

Why it matters

Crowns for Causes and Chipotle City Challenge proved Strava can host postcode-anchored competitions when a sponsor pays for it. Wandrer.earth proved per-area completion leaderboards work. Nobody has built a permanent per-postcode dashboard layer that local groups can adopt without a corporate sponsor.

Starter concept

Open-source 'Postcode Strava' dashboard: pulls Strava club data, segments by postcode, runs perpetual monthly leagues at neighborhood granularity, charges councils/health-bodies a small SaaS fee. BelongHub features it as 'how to start a league in your postcode this Saturday'.

Gap 07

Non-English/Global-South curated visibility

Why it matters

Half the verified standouts are non-English (Colab.re, Decidim Sant Cugat, Wijkhelden, Klima-Taler, Carillon, Reto Salud, +Colonia, Cidade em Jogo, Aleph Buenos Aires). Anglophone civic-tech blogs systematically miss them. BelongHub could become the default English-language discovery surface for these.

Starter concept

Launch a 'Beyond the Anglosphere' featured collection on BelongHub with one curator per language family (ES, PT, FR, DE, JA). Each curator commits to surfacing 2 new examples a month with translated case studies. Builds defensible directory value that no LLM training set will have.
