Heart Foundation Walking (Australia)

National volunteer-led walking-group network with community-pride layer · Australia (all states; 1,000+ Walk Organisers) · Since 1995; 350,000+ participants to date

Free national network where volunteer Walk Organisers ('Red Striders') lead local walking groups. Goal: 400,000 Australians taking extra steps. Heart Foundation runs paid 'Just Walk It' national challenges layered on top.

Areas compete

Postcode-search directory pits suburbs against one another for most active group; annual challenges (Just Walk It, MyMarathon) rank teams (often from one suburb/club) on a national leaderboard. State chapters publish 'most active town' content.

People support each other

Each Walking Group is a single suburb/club led by a trained local Walk Organiser. Members literally walk side-by-side weekly; group becomes a social hub (book clubs, coffee after, welfare checks on members who skip a week).

Why this is worth knowing

Pure intra-area support (the volunteer-led walking group is the unit) layered with national programme competition. Demonstrates the LEADER-of-LOCAL-GROUP role that BelongHub could feature as a recruitment lane.
