Carnaval de Negros y Blancos (Pasto Float Competition)
Artisan collectives. Many rooted in specific Pasto barrios. Build monumental carrozas (floats) up to 15m long and 10m high over six months. Up to 50 people per collective collaborate on a single carroza. Floats compete in juried categories during the Desfile Magno; 2026 first prize ('Indomable Mujer Guerrera') scored 97.50. The Carnavalito originated in El Ejido neighborhood in 1966 as a children's version.
Public scored competition between collectives/barrios with announced winners; one 2026 carroza won with a specific point total, showing a transparent ranking system.
~50 neighbors per project meet for half a year. Sketching, scale modeling, sculpting, painting. Under a master artisan. The barrio funds materials, hosts the workshop, and parades together. Children participate via the Carnavalito.
Long-cycle (6-month) creative collaboration with a single public competitive moment. A different rhythm from monthly meetups. Strong intergenerational and master-apprentice intra-area dynamic absent from Rio samba schools.
