Palio di Siena (Contrade)
Siena is permanently divided into 17 contrade (Eagle, Snail, Wave, Panther, Tortoise, Owl, etc.), each a geographic ward with its own colors, symbol, church, museum, and social club. Ten contrade race horses bareback in Piazza del Campo at each Palio. But the contrada is also the year-round home of feasts, baptisms, choirs, children's groups, and mutual-aid funds.
Direct head-to-head race between 10 contrade per Palio; alliances and rivalries are formal and tracked across generations. Rankings, captured banners ('palii'), and contrada-vs-contrada feuds drive belonging.
Lifelong membership from baptism; contrade run banquets, fund museums, train sbandieratori (flag-throwers), and operate as mutual aid for residents. Each contrada has a 'Society' clubhouse open year-round.
The clearest example of permanent geographic team identity coupled to a competition cadence. The contrada model is essentially what BelongHub is trying to create as a digital scaffold. Useful to study and explicitly cite as inspiration.
