Corrida dos Bonecos Gigantes de Olinda

cultural-creative · Olinda, Pernambuco, Brazil · annual carnival previas (pre-carnival weekends); 2026 edition confirmed

Olinda's iconic giant puppets ('bonecos gigantes'. Homem da Meia-Noite, Mulher do Dia, Menino da Tarde, plus 200+ others representing local and global figures) are run up Olinda's steep colonial hills in a juried race. 2026 added a new modality. Curator-selected runners compete sequentially in feminine and masculine categories, judged on technical criteria including puppet weight class and performance. Encontro dos Bonecos Gigantes meeting is held in Guadalupe neighborhood.

Areas compete

Scored race up the hill with explicit categories and a curator-evaluated technical score. Each puppet is associated with a specific atelier/community of origin; rivalries between puppet-maker collectives are public.

People support each other

Each boneco is built and maintained by a neighborhood atelier. Months of papier-mache, wood, and fabric work. The carrier-runner trains physically; the atelier collective fundraises, repaints annually, and parades together.

Why this is worth knowing

Combines physical sport with sculptural craft. A unique hybrid not covered by Castellers or samba. Hilltop-finish-line format gives a clean spatial spectacle BelongHub could borrow for digital leaderboards.
