Bristol Walk Fest (100km / Slow Ways / 3,000-step) Challenges
City-wide May festival run by Bristol Walking Alliance with multiple parallel challenges: walk 100km across the city's parks (visit listed parks), walk Slow Ways routes that link Bristol to surrounding towns, and a 3,000-step-a-day pledge challenge.
Slow Ways challenge has walkers verify routes BETWEEN neighbouring towns and parishes. Each route walked counts for connecting two settlements; 100km park challenge has wards/parks competing on park-visit counts.
Park-based 'walking weekend' meet-ups in each Bristol park, organised by local groups (Friends of X Park). Walkers in the same ward coordinate on WhatsApp/Slow Ways forums to verify routes together (safety in numbers).
Festival format compresses the year's walking into shareable, social moments and stitches Bristol's parks into a network with implicit inter-park competition. Slow Ways is itself a national mesh that BelongHub could feature.
Others in the same family
Palio di Siena (Contrade)
Siena is permanently divided into 17 contrade (Eagle, Snail, Wave, Panther, Tortoise, Owl, etc.), each a geographic ward with its own colors, symbol, church, museum, and social club. Ten contrade race horses bareback in Piazza del Campo at each Palio. But the contrada is also the year-round home of feasts, baptisms, choirs, children's groups, and mutual-aid funds.
Las Fallas de Valencia (Casals Fallers competition)
~750 neighborhood 'casals fallers' (faller clubs). Covering ~25% of Valencia's population. Each commission and build a satirical sculptural monument (a 'falla') up to five stories tall in their own neighborhood. All fallas compete in juried categories (Seccion Especial down to local sections), plus a separate Ninot Indultat popular-vote contest decides which figure escapes burning on 19 March.
Lewes Bonfire Societies
Seven (sometimes counted as six) bonfire societies. Cliffe, Commercial Square, Lewes Borough, Nevill Juvenile, South Street, Waterloo, and Southover. Each represent a different quarter of the town. Every Bonfire Night they run separate processions, costumed tableaux, satirical effigies, fire sites and firework displays. Societies meet in the Bonfire Council Costume Competition at the Town Hall to compete head-to-head on costume craft.
Notting Hill Carnival Sound Systems
30+ permanent sound systems (Aba Shanti-I, Disya Jeneration since 1985, Killerwatt, Channel One, Rampage, Arts-A-Light, etc.) take over specific street corners across Notting Hill, Westbourne Park, and Ladbroke Grove for the carnival weekend. Each system is a long-running crew with home turf and stylistic identity (roots reggae, ragga, dub, soca, UK garage). The parallel Panorama is the formal UK National Steel Pan Championship between steel-band crews.
Mural Arts Philadelphia Block-Captain Programs
Mural Arts Philadelphia runs 50-100 community mural projects per year, each anchored to a specific block via a 3-block-radius consultation. Every mural is co-designed with block captains, town watch groups, library leaders, and district leaders. The program employs 300+ artists and has produced over 3,600 murals across Philadelphia neighborhoods including Kensington, Northern Liberties, and the Gayborhood.
Jane's Walk Festival
