Wiener Klimateam (Vienna Climate Team)

Participatory climate budgeting / district-based · Vienna, Austria · 2022-2026 (rolling)

City of Vienna participatory program where residents in specific districts (Bezirke) submit climate-protection ideas; municipal climate councils review and fund the best. Operates on a rotating district cycle with €6M+ budgeted in 2024. Each Bezirk has its own cohort and outputs.

Areas compete

Districts (Bezirke) are activated on a rolling cycle; outcomes per district (number of ideas submitted, funded, implemented) are publicly reported, creating implicit district-vs-district comparison. The €100M city climate fund explicitly allocates per-Bezirk, making districts visible peers.

People support each other

Within each Bezirk, residents submit ideas, vote in citizen juries, attend co-design workshops, and implement projects together. Explicit intra-district participatory infrastructure with municipal staff facilitating. Strong local-pride and collaborative scaffolding.

Why this is worth knowing

Different from app-based gamification: this is a real participatory-budgeting program where the 'game' is the public visibility of which Bezirk produces the most/best citizen-funded climate projects. Useful reference for governmental civic-engagement programs in BelongHub catalog.
