Klima-Taler

Climate behavior change / municipal currency · Germany - 50+ cities (Leer, Wolfenbüttel, Kempen, Leinetal, etc.) · 2023-2026 (ongoing)

App by Berlin greentech Blacksquared. Every 5 kg of CO2 saved (via cycling, transit, energy-saving) earns one digital Klima-Taler redeemable at participating local retailers. In 2024 the city of Leer in East Frisia saved 291.3 tons of CO2 and topped the national ranking, with 54 partner shops and 10,000+ redeemed Talers.

Areas compete

National city-vs-city leaderboard ranks all participating municipalities by total CO2 saved. Marketing explicitly frames it as 'your citizens enter into a playful competition' with other cities. Separate ranking for participating schools across the network. Press coverage celebrates winning towns (Leer's 2024 victory).

People support each other

Within each city, residents join their 'city team' and contribute to the municipal total. Local retailers fund the rewards, creating shopkeeper-citizen alliances. Schools have a parallel sub-leaderboard. Civic pride mechanic: 'help Leer beat Wolfenbüttel.'

Why this is worth knowing

Rare example of a real local-currency loop tied to inter-city competition. The Talers are redeemable at neighborhood shops, so the gamification routes value back into the local economy. Strong model for BelongHub catalog of community-economic-loop tools.
