STADTRADELN (CITY CYCLING)
Run by Klima-Buendnis (Climate Alliance), 1.2m+ Germans log kilometres cycled over a self-chosen 21 consecutive days between May-September. Although billed as a climate campaign, it doubles as a population-level physical-activity intervention - municipalities sign up officially and their citizens, employers, schools and local councillors form teams. Stuttgart 2026: 8,809 participants, 1.8m km.
National rankings by total km cycled, split into 5 population-size brackets (so small towns compete fairly with cities), plus a separate award for the 'most active local parliament' (councillors must literally cycle for points). Best-newcomer prizes too.
Within each municipality, teams form around employers (e.g, BKP Berolina logged 3,006 km in Velten), schools (Eschbach-Gymnasium logged 82,856 km in Stuttgart), universities, sports clubs and neighborhoods. Local star captains organize group rides, themed weeks, and shared routes.
Rare example of a public-good competition where elected officials themselves must compete on behalf of their ward - hardcoding political accountability into the leaderboard. Population-bracket fairness is a model worth copying.
