STADTRADELN (City Cycling)

Active travel / climate civic competition · Germany (3,000+ municipalities) and partner countries · 2008-2026 (annual)

21-day national bicycle-kilometer competition organized by Klima-Bündnis (Climate Alliance). Over 1.2 million participants in 2024-2025. Citizens log kilometers via app or website; municipalities and councils form teams.

Areas compete

National leaderboard ranks municipalities against each other by total kilometers cycled, with five population-size brackets so small towns compete fairly with metros. Separate award category for the 'most active municipal parliament' pits city councils against each other. Towns have explicit rivals (e.g, Münster vs Bremen).

People support each other

Within each city, residents form sub-teams (workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, sports clubs). Members of a team can see each other's kilometers and motivate each other. Council members (Stadtparlament) are required to cycle as team captains, modeling civic participation. Strong town-pride mobilization.

Why this is worth knowing

Uses population-bracketing to keep competition fair across asymmetric city sizes. A transferable mechanic for any BelongHub leaderboard catalog. Also blends elected officials into the playing field, which is rare in civic gamification.
