Plastic Free Schools (Surfers Against Sewage)

youth-activism-status-ladder · UK (national, with seaside-town clustering) · Active 2024-2026

Free pupil-led programme where school teams complete 5 objectives (audit, swaps, campaign, etc.) to earn Plastic Free School status. Connects directly to SAS's Plastic Free Communities so the school feeds into its town's status.

Areas compete

Towns/parishes pursue Plastic Free Community status and need a critical mass of accredited schools, businesses and councils - towns visibly race to be the first plastic-free town in their region (e.g. Penzance, Aberporth races).

People support each other

Within each school, pupil 'Eco Reps' build coalitions with caterers, head teachers and parents; locally, schools partner with their town's Plastic Free Community steering group, shopkeepers and councillors.

Why this is worth knowing

Two-tier mechanic where school-level status FEEDS town-level status creates explicit collaboration up the geographic ladder - more sophisticated than Eco-Schools and rarely listed alongside it.
