WOW - the Walk to School Challenge (Living Streets)

School-vs-school active-travel competition · UK (2,000+ primary schools) · 2006-present; 2024-25 badge designs published

Pupils log their daily mode of travel on the WOW Travel Tracker; those who actively travel at least once a week for a month earn a themed collectable badge (recycled plastic, made in Cornwall). Schools achieve 59% fewer car journeys and 18% more walking on average.

Areas compete

Schools compete in the annual national WOW Badge Design Competition (pupil-drawn designs picked from across the UK become the next year's badges worn nationwide). Local-authority dashboards rank schools within a borough by % active travel; some councils (Oxfordshire, etc.) run district-vs-district WOW initiatives.

People support each other

Within each school, classes track together and celebrate badge-day collectively. Peer pressure to walk so your class is the 'WOW class'. Parents organise Park-and-Stride walking buses on neighborhood streets, building cross-family routines.

Why this is worth knowing

Real-world badge prize designed by neighbourhood kids makes the geographic pride tangible. Long-running (since 2006), evidenced behavior change, and the badge-design competition is itself a between-school mechanic worth cloning for other domains.
