Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel (formerly Big Pedal)

school-active-travel-competition · UK (national) · 2026 edition (17th year, 16-27 March 2026)

UK's largest inter-school active-travel challenge run by Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (Sustrans). For two weeks, schools log every walked, wheeled, scooted or cycled journey via a school portal; a school's best five days determine final position on a national leaderboard, with badges and certificates.

Areas compete

National leaderboard ranks schools (and by extension neighborhoods/local authorities) by percentage of pupils using active travel; local authority tables (e.g. Bristol, South Gloucestershire) drive borough-vs-borough framing.

People support each other

Whole-class and whole-school participation needed because rankings use percentage of pupils, so kids recruit parents, neighbours and friends to walk together; daily logging is a class ritual; pupils help less mobile peers join in.

Why this is worth knowing

Already on user's seed list but the percentage-of-pupils mechanic combined with town/borough sub-leagues is the textbook between-area + within-area combo BelongHub is hunting for.
