Front Porch Forum (Vermont town-by-town civic newsletter)

civic-tech-platforms · Vermont + parts of upstate NY, USA · Founded 2006, ~200,000 households (~250 forums)

Hyperlocal email/web forum, one per town or neighbourhood. ~800/1000 households in Vermont are active members. Center for Media Engagement found 81% of users say FPF makes them more informed (vs 26% for Facebook, 32% for Nextdoor). One rural town hit 50% subscription after 1 year with 66% posting, breaking the 90/9/1 lurker rule (34/44/22 instead).

Areas compete

Each town/neighbourhood has a separate forum with its own subscription rate, posting rate, valuation rating, and demographic mix - all published in FPF's research reports. Towns implicitly compete on the per-town participation ratios; FPF and partners publicise standouts (rural towns hitting 50% household penetration become case studies).

People support each other

Within each forum, members post local events, lost dogs, ride-shares, requests for help - and the documented outcome is that FPF members are 'significantly more likely to attend a local event, discuss issues with a neighbor or volunteer'. The forum is literally a coordination layer for intra-town mutual support.

Why this is worth knowing

Provides empirical participation-rate benchmarks per geographic area (per-town subscription, posting %, valuation) that are rare elsewhere. The town-by-town structure is closer to BelongHub's likely model than Nextdoor's algorithmic feed - and 2024 academic research validates the 'town as unit' approach.
