Beat the Street

RFID-based town-wide walking game · UK (200+ communities), Intelligent Health · 2010-present; widely active 2023-2026

A whole-town real-life game turning lamp-posts into 'Beat Boxes' (RFID sensors). Players tap cards at boxes while walking/cycling to score points. Run as time-limited campaigns (4-6 weeks) covering an entire town or city zone. Over 2 million participants across 200 communities.

Areas compete

Live public leaderboards rank schools, workplaces and community groups against each other within a town - and across towns when multiple are running. Both *total points* and *average points per person* leaderboards mean small schools/areas can win on per-capita basis, not just absolute size.

People support each other

Players join a school, workplace or community team; all their tap-ins pool to the team total. Schools, parents and neighbours coordinate routes and group walks because individual taps lift the collective ranking. Prizes (book/sports vouchers) go to teams, not individuals.

Why this is worth knowing

Distinct from Pokemon GO / Ingress because it's *commissioned by local authorities* and explicitly designed for inter-team / inter-school competition within a defined geography. The dual leaderboard (total + per-capita) is a great mechanic to copy - it neutralises area-size advantage.
