Beat the Street

Public health gamified walking competition · UK (Reading-based, deployed in 100+ towns globally) · 2010-present (active 2024-2026)

Free 6-week town-wide walking/cycling game where residents tap RFID 'Beat Boxes' on lampposts. A whole town's beat-the-street game pits schools, workplaces and community groups in that town against each other on dual leaderboards (total points and average points). Each game becomes a town/borough-wide health intervention commissioned by NHS ICBs, councils, or active-travel partners (e.g, Reading Borough Council, Hammersmith & Fulham, South Derbyshire, Wokingham). Over 1.9m participants across 5,000+ schools in 10 years.

Areas compete

Within each town deployment, schools/wards/community teams compete on a public leaderboard for prizes (sports vouchers, book vouchers); separately, deployed towns get comparative impact reports (miles walked, active-travel uptake) that councils benchmark against each other.

People support each other

Players within a school/team collectively pool points; families form teams; schools share Beat Boxes with surrounding streets so neighbours support each other to tap in. The 'average score' leaderboard explicitly rewards small teams that work together, not just big ones.

Why this is worth knowing

One of the few examples where a town's health authority literally turns the neighborhood map into a board game with hardware infrastructure. The dual leaderboard (total + average) is a clean BelongHub-style mechanic to keep small areas competitive with big ones.
