WeatherXM Network

DePIN weather / hyperlocal stations · Global (strong clusters in Greece, US, UK, Germany) · 2022-2026

Community-owned weather network: ~9,500 stations deployed by individuals. Owners earn $WXM daily based on Quality of Data and Proof of Location. Station density per cell is visible on a public explorer, and the protocol uses 'cell' geometry to reward (and cap) stations per area.

Areas compete

Stations are organized into H3 cells; per-cell density and data-quality scores are public. Some communities (e.g, Greek weather enthusiasts vs. US clusters) have publicly competed on cell coverage and data uptime. Enterprise data buyers can target specific regions, raising regional value.

People support each other

Within a cell, neighbors must coordinate placement (rooftops without obstructions) because over-saturation lowers each station's reward. Incentivizes a local 'who hosts where' conversation on Discord regional channels and at local DePIN meetups.

Why this is worth knowing

Cell-level reward caps create a real Tragedy-of-the-Commons style local coordination problem that residents solve via Discord/Telegram regional groups. Emergent neighborhood pride around 'our cell is fully covered.'

Helium Mobile Discovery Mapping + Boosted Locations (LA pilot)

Experimental / Web3 · United States (Los Angeles flagship, expanding)

Helium Mobile subscribers opt into Discovery Mapping: walking/driving with the app maps eligible H3 hexes (~2 basketball courts each); subscribers must hit 40 hexes/day to earn. The data drives Boosted Locations. High-footfall hexes where hotspot deployers earn extra MOBILE rewards. LA was the first city specifically targeted with a city-wide boosted-location rollout.

FOAM Map. Community POI curation with staking

Experimental / Web3 · Global, US-heavy

FOAM lets users curate a decentralized map of Points of Interest by staking FOAM tokens on each POI; bad POIs can be challenged. Each region's POI density and quality is visible on the public map. Originally paired with a planned 'Proof of Location' radio beacon network.

Hivemapper Network. Team Area Completion bonuses & customer Bursts/AOI bounties

Experimental / Web3 · Global (used heavily in US, EU, LATAM)

Decentralized dashcam mapping network where drivers earn HONEY for road imagery. Customers (map data buyers) can post 'Bursts' / Areas of Interest bounties. HONEY put up for grabs on a defined city or polygon. When 100% coverage is achieved, the bounty is split among ALL contributors who helped, forcing local drivers to coordinate. Cities compete on the Global Map Progress dashboard, and region multipliers can be tuned up for under-mapped or high-value areas.

NATIX Network (AI-camera DePIN with country/city leaderboards)

Experimental / Web3 · Global, with strong driver clusters in Germany, US, Iran, Türkiye, LATAM

Decentralized 'Internet of Cameras': drivers use the Drive& smartphone app or VX360 dashcam to capture geospatial imagery and earn NATIX tokens. 243k+ drivers across 171 countries; 153M+ km mapped. Partnered with DIMO for cross-rewards.

Orna: Conqueror's Guild

Location-Based Games · Global (developer Northern Forge Studios, Canada)

Pixel-art GPS RPG where players claim real-world Settlements that spawn at popular POIs (parks, landmarks). Each Settlement awards titles (Count, Grand Duke, Emperor) for the holder. Kingdoms (player-formed factions) wage 24-hour Wars against matched rivals.

Munzee Clan Wars

Location-Based Games · Global (Munzee HQ, McKinney TX)

Players capture physical and virtual 'munzees' at real-world locations. Each month, clans (player teams) battle in Clan Wars with rotating monthly requirements (capture types, regions, point totals). Levels 1-6 with reserved tiers for premium players.
