Cool Choices

Sustainability behavior change / team game · Wisconsin, USA (workplace + community deployments) · 2011-2026 (active)

4-6 week online team-based sustainability game. Teams of employees, congregations, or community groups log daily sustainable actions; points appear on a public scoreboard visible to all players. Used by Miron Construction, law firms, school districts, etc.

Areas compete

Public team-vs-team scoreboards within each deployment (e.g, Miron's offices compete against each other). Multi-organization deployments pit company teams against each other across the state. End-of-game prizes for top team AND top individual.

People support each other

Teams are 5-15 colleagues from the same workplace/community. Members see each other's daily logs, encouraging mutual reminders ('did you carpool today?'). Team leaders coach and rally members. Research published in Journal of Environmental Psychology showed the social/team element drove the behavior change.

Why this is worth knowing

One of the most thoroughly studied examples. Peer-reviewed evidence that the team+leaderboard combo (not the individual app) is what drives behavior change. Highly transferable model.
