Eco-Olympics / Green Cup (campus residential)

University residence-hall energy + water reduction league · USA (Northwestern, U of Illinois, WashU St Louis, UCLA, Oberlin, UNC, U Florida, Chico State) · 2006-2026 (annual; Northwestern Green Cup since 2006, WashU since 2011)

Month-long competition between residence halls (dorms) on percent reduction in electricity and water vs baseline. Tracked via real meter data, often visualized on color-changing orbs (Oberlin BuildingOS).

Areas compete

Dorm-vs-dorm league on real meter data. National rollup via Campus Conservation Nationals enables inter-university comparison. Public leaderboards (e.g. UNC Green Games).

People support each other

Each dorm has student leadership teams who recruit floor mates, run promo events, organize switch-off pledges. Cal State Chico reported ~1,000 students mobilized; saved $2,000 in one week. Hall identity and rivalry drive collective action.

Why this is worth knowing

Well-documented, decade-plus running model for a self-contained geographic unit (residence hall). Lessons translate cleanly to apartment buildings or housing blocks for BelongHub.
