Reto Salud (Elche)

Neighborhood childhood-obesity prevention competition · Elche, Spain · 2024-2025 (2nd edition)

Elche city council runs a 3-month community challenge targeting childhood overweight/obesity in two specific peripheral neighborhoods (Carrús and Los Palmerales), where families register and log healthy-eating and physical-activity targets together. Designed around 'barrio' identity - the neighborhood as the team.

Areas compete

Carrús vs Los Palmerales is the explicit inter-barrio framing - the two neighborhoods are intentionally pitched against each other for engagement, with public ceremonies recognizing the more-engaged barrio.

People support each other

Within each barrio, schools, paediatricians, neighborhood associations and parent groups work jointly with the council's salud comunitaria team - very 'Salut als Barris' (Barcelona) influenced. Local cooking workshops, group walks, and shared shopping-list challenges.

Why this is worth knowing

Rare Spanish-language example where the unit of competition is an officially-named urban barrio, with municipal endorsement and salud-comunitaria methodology. Good non-English reference for BelongHub catalog.
