Defi Ensemble, on bouge (ParticipACTION Community Challenge)
Every June, Canadian communities (cities, towns, First Nations, rural municipalities) log physical-activity minutes via the ParticipACTION app to compete for the title of 'Canada's Most Active Community' and a CAD $100,000 prize, plus 12 regional prizes ($5k-$10k) for the most active community in each province/territory. Quebec City won the 'most active community in Quebec' prize multiple times. Over $1.5m awarded to 49 communities since 2019; $7.2m in grants for follow-on local sport initiatives.
Direct ranked competition between named municipalities. Per-capita-adjusted leaderboards mean a small town can beat a big one; provincial winners are crowned separately so regions compete inside their tier.
Each community mobilizes its own schools, rec centres, sports clubs, businesses, and residents to log minutes for the local total. Local mayors/recreation departments run events, free classes, and 'come and try' sessions during June so neighbours move together. The $100k prize must be spent on local sport/PA projects, so winning literally returns to the community.
Cleanest large-scale municipality-vs-municipality public-health league we found, with explicit per-capita ladders and tangible community prize that funds future intra-area programming. Very transplantable for BelongHub catalog.
