RECICLOS (Ecoembes)

Deposit-return-style recycling rewards app with municipal challenges · Spain (689 municipalities including Catalunya, Balearic Islands, La Rioja, Aragon) · 2020-2026 (active)

Scan a beverage can/bottle barcode, deposit in the yellow bin (or RVM), photo-confirm. Earn RECICLOS points redeemable for prizes, raffles, or NGO donations. Built by Ecoembes (the producer-responsibility org).

Areas compete

Municipalities and regions are onboarded one by one; participating town pages publish recycling stats and rewards pools, enabling implicit inter-municipal comparison and PR. Local councils often launch RECICLOS town challenges to compete on activation.

People support each other

Points can be donated to LOCAL community/environmental projects, and prize raffles (e.g. bikes) often have local sponsors. So individual scans feed back into the user's own town. Local councils run town-wide RECICLOS campaigns that residents rally around.

Why this is worth knowing

Spanish-language example with real adoption scale (689 municipalities). Shows how producer-responsibility EPR money can fund a gamified per-municipality competition layer.
