Danjiri GPS apps (Kishiwada / Otori / Tadaoka)

traditional-digital-hybrid · Osaka prefecture, Japan · 2022-2026

Family of apps tracking the locations of multi-ton wooden danjiri floats during festivals where neighborhood teams race them through narrow streets at full sprint. 'Danjiri Ima Doko GPS' covers Kishiwada Matsuri (one of Japan's most intense float festivals); Tadaoka Danjiri Navi covers the Tadaoka town festival; Otori Danjiri Association uses GPSnext to track multiple floats.

Areas compete

Each danjiri belongs to a specific chō (block) within a town, and the festival's whole structure is competitive sprinting between block teams (yarimawashi corner turns). Live tracking lets spectators and rival blocks watch position, lead times and intersections in real time. Quantifying what was previously implicit rivalry.

People support each other

The pull crews (~500-1000 per chō) and their families use the apps to position themselves on the route, coordinate handoffs between hikite, and follow their own block's progress. Supports the intense block-level pride and collaboration that powers these dangerous events.

Why this is worth knowing

Multiple parallel implementations (per town/festival, not one national app) hint at a market gap for a unified 'Strava for neighborhood float racing'. Relevant inspiration for a community-team product.
