Folias de Reis (Brazil)
Brazilian companhias de reis: a flag-carrying troupe of musicians, palhaços (clown figures) and a mestre that visits houses singing for the Three Kings between Christmas and 6 January, asking blessings and food in exchange for songs. Concentrated in Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Goiás and Espírito Santo.
Multi-generational, often a single extended family. The bandeira (flag) is sacred, the songs improvised on traditional structures. The form is at risk and is being deliberately preserved.
26 companhias across São Paulo interior, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, dominated by Juiz de Fora, Belo Horizonte, Cachoeiro de Itapemirim and Palmital. Founding dates are mostly unrecorded, consistent with the tradition's oral/family transmission.
- Bandeira de Reis nº 1 de Florínea (1932) as one of the oldest with documented year
- Companhia de Reis Família Faceiros (1949) Palmital lineage
- Cluster of four Estrela do Oriente foliões showing the name's wide diffusion
How this one actually works
The core unit is the companhia (also called a bandeira or terno), and its work is the giro or jornada: a route of house visits that runs from Christmas Eve through 6 January, the eve of Epiphany. The bandeira, a decorated flag bearing the Three Kings, leads every procession and is treated as the group's holiest object; behind it walk the mestre and his contramestre, a choir that answers his lines in stacked vocal parts (tipe, requinta, contralto and more), and the masked palhaços or bastiões who guard the flag, work the crowd and pass the hat. At each home the mestre improvises a chegada to ask entry and blessings and a despedida to thank the family, who repay the songs with food, coffee and a place to rest. The cycle closes after 6 January with a festa de arremate, the ceremonial handover (entrega) of the flag and a shared feast. In the off season the companhias reunite at the Encontro Nacional de Folias de Reis in Muqui, Espírito Santo, a non-competitive gathering held every August since 1950 that pulls in dozens of groups from across the country.
The devotion traces back to medieval Iberian worship of the Magi, which surged across Europe after the relics said to be the Three Kings were moved to Cologne Cathedral in 1164. Jesuit missionaries carried the sung processions to Brazil around 1559, where Manuel da Nóbrega and José de Anchieta reworked them as catechism set to music. The earliest Brazilian records appear in seventeenth century Bahia, and from there the practice put down its deepest roots in the rural interior of the Southeast and Center West, where it still lives today.
You do not audition, you just fall in behind the flag and walk. The nights are long and unhurried: the group moves house to house on foot, you learn the sung responses by hearing them repeated, and someone will hand you a lantern or point you toward the caixa and pandeiro until you find your place. Expect to be fed at nearly every stop and to eat, pray and sometimes doze alongside people who have done this since childhood, and in many companhias today women walk the giro too, softening an older custom that kept the round all male.

How to start folias de reis in your city
a seasonal cycle · 5-15 people · neighborhood anchor
- A consistent core of 5-15 people after six months
- Public visibility through belonging
- Cross-generational membership (or at least mixed ages by year two)
- Newcomers absorbed without losing the founding crew
- Find 3-5 co-founders who can commit to a seasonal cycle for at least a year.
- Pick a recurring time and place. Calendar discipline matters more than perfect timing.
- Design a clear visible identity early: name, simple kit or symbol, a short manifesto.
- Make the activity itself the recruitment tool. Show up in public; people will join.
- Build an explicit beginners path. The first session should feel welcoming, not intimidating.
- Decide your contribution to the wider neighbourhood now, not later: a performance, a service, a cleanup, a meal.
- · Expect moderate physical involvement; calibrate expectations honestly.
- · Don't let founders become irreplaceable. Plan for handover from year one.
- · Open entry means churn. Build rituals that turn drop-ins into regulars.
