Garba & Dandiya Raas Groups (Gujarat)

Garba and Dandiya groups of Gujarat (Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat) and the global Gujarati diaspora that organize the nine nights of Navratri. Each group built around a singer-composer (Atul Purohit, Falguni Pathak) plus rehearsals open to the whole neighborhood.

Tens of thousands dance every night for nine nights. Cross-generational, mixed-gender, beginner-welcoming. The largest open-air dance circles in the world.

Inside the archetype

How this one actually works

The season is autumn Navratri, the nine nights that fall across September or October, and everything builds toward them. A singer-composer fronts a live band of dhol, tabla, and keyboards on a raised stage, while dancers move in concentric rings, counterclockwise, around a central garbo lamp or an image of the goddess Amba. The steps escalate through the night: a simple two-clap taali early on, then three-clap and the swaying dodhiya, and later the paired dandiya sticks once the crowd is warm. Neighborhoods and organized mandlis rehearse for weeks beforehand so the rings stay tight, and each night runs late, often past midnight. The whole thing peaks on the ninth night and the Sharad Purnima full moon that follows, when the circles are largest and the tempo is relentless.

Where it comes from

Garba takes its name from the Sanskrit garbha, meaning womb, and the oldest form circles a garbo: a perforated earthen pot cradling a lit lamp that stands for the soul and for life itself. Danced through Navratri in honor of Durga, it grew as a women's devotional folk form across Gujarat, while Dandiya Raas, the stick version, carries echoes of Krishna's raslila and a martial reading in which the sticks stand for the goddess's swords. Both spread outward with the Gujarati diaspora, into Mumbai and then East Africa, Britain, and North America across the twentieth century. In December 2023, UNESCO inscribed garba on its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Your first time

You do not need to know any steps, and nobody expects you to. Join at the outer edge of a ring where the pace is gentlest, watch the feet in front of you, and fall into the clap, step, clap that repeats until your body remembers it. The tempo is forgiving early in the evening and only quickens later, so an hour in you will be moving with everyone else, and more often than not someone will wave you into a tighter circle without a single word.

the Saurashtra form where men dance the vigorous Raas and women dance the song-led Raasda

the choreographed North American university competition circuit, judged and team-based rather than open-circle

How to start garba & dandiya raas groups in your city

a seasonal cycle · 50+ people · global anchor

Signals it's working
  • A consistent core of 50+ people after six months
  • Public visibility through belonging
  • Cross-generational membership (or at least mixed ages by year two)
  • Newcomers absorbed without losing the founding crew
First six moves
  1. Find 3-5 co-founders who can commit to a seasonal cycle for at least a year.
  2. Pick a recurring time and place. Calendar discipline matters more than perfect timing.
  3. Design a clear visible identity early: name, simple kit or symbol, a short manifesto.
  4. Make the activity itself the recruitment tool. Show up in public; people will join.
  5. Build an explicit beginners path. The first session should feel welcoming, not intimidating.
  6. Decide your contribution to the wider neighbourhood now, not later: a performance, a service, a cleanup, a meal.
Cautions
  • · Expect real physical commitment; calibrate expectations honestly.
  • · Don't let founders become irreplaceable. Plan for handover from year one.
  • · Open entry means churn. Build rituals that turn drop-ins into regulars.
