Ching Won Musical Society (清韻音樂社)
One of Vancouver Chinatown's two longest-running Cantonese music societies, founded in 1935 alongside Jin Wah Sing. Members gather Saturday nights in a second-floor clubroom on Pender Street (across from the Chinese Cultural Centre) to rehearse yueju arias, play traditional instruments, and keep a living stage tradition that has defined Chinese Canadian social life since the 1930s.
Still active after more than 90 years, with only a brief wartime pause. A core Vancouver Chinatown third place: not a professional company, but a standing club where laundry workers, restaurant staff, and their descendants have practiced Cantonese opera together for generations. Documented in UBC and Museum of Vancouver archives.
