Jana Sanskriti Centre for Theatre of the Oppressed
Badu, West Bengal·Indiaest. 1985
A grassroots theater movement whose local teams build plays from social problems in their own communities. During Forum Theatre sessions, audience members become spect-actors, enter the action and rehearse possible responses alongside trained performers and activists.
The movement grew from a village in the Sundarbans into thirty satellite teams, including nine all-women teams in West Bengal, and became India's first major exponent of Theatre of the Oppressed.
